Arusha - A Beautiful Entry Point for a Tanzania Safari on the Northern Circuit

The Tanzania Safari Circuits of North, South and West

A Tanzania safari can take in the delights of any one of its three main safari circuits. The least frequented west circuit offers the Mahale Mountains and their exceptional primate wildlife, as well as the stunningly vast lakes of Victoria and Tanganyika, whilst the southern circuit houses the hidden gems of Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park. But it is the northern circuit where Tanzania's best known destinations are to be found. The close proximity of the parks and their world famous status make this Tanzania safari circuit the most frequented, and it is through Arusha that its delights can be explored. Not just a point of entry however, Arusha has some delights of its own.

Arusha National Park

Overlooked as a Tanzania safari destination in favor of its larger cousins, Arusha National Park offers a wealth of diversity that can be explored within a short space of time. The Ngurdoto Crater provides a geographical focus point to the surrounding forests, grassy hills and woodland, and the beautiful Lake Momela acts as the parks water source. Whilst wildlife viewing is better served on the open plains of the Serengeti, or the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, Arusha has its own highlights, its montane forest being the best place on the northern circuit to see the amusingly acrobatic colobus monkey. The floor of the Ngurdoto Crater houses buffalo and wandering warthog, whilst Lake Momela plays host to scores of flamingo and waterfowl. Zebra and giraffe can be observed grazing on the plains, whilst lurking leopards and hyena stand in for the predators. Other common wildlife such as elephant and lion are absent from the park, but Arusha's small size combined with its vast diversity makes it a fantastic place to explore in combination with one of the north's larger parks.

Exploring the Town of Arusha Before Embarking on a Tanzania Safari

The gateway for Tanzania safari vacations in the north, Arusha Town not only lies within easy access to Arusha National Park, but also the parks of Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. Whilst most travelers to Arusha will simply be passing through, as a town of quaint peacefulness it is worth exploration in its own right. Situated at the foot of Mount Meru, Africa's fifth highest peak, with a surrounding landscape of coffee, maize and wheat plantations, Arusha grew from a once small German settlement into the serene market town of today. A haven for cultural tourism, visits to coffee plantations and surrounding Masai villages can be arranged and a day spent wandering around its market streets is a perfect way to pick up some souvenirs. Taking a safari vacation in this part of Tanzania also puts you within reach of Tanzanite, the bright blue gemstone found in the towns surrounding hills.
