The Safari of a Lifetime Begins in Masai Mara

Every year starting around July over a million wildebeest, a half-million zebra, and hundreds of thousands of gazelles make an annual migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya.

They stay around until about October, when they make their way back to where they started. This makes the four months of Kenya's winter and spring the most spectacular time to come.

That's not to say that you won't see any animals in the Masai Mara, often just called the Mara, any other time of year. This is home to Africa's Big 5, which includes lions and leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhino. But, the huge influx of animals makes others follow. Here's a chance to see cheetahs, Nile Crocodiles, hippos, hyena, giraffe, and bat-eared fox.

Bird watching is an activity onto itself. The Mara is home to some 470 species of birds, like ostrich, cranes, and vultures to just name a few. You can get a birds-eye view of the Mara by taking a hot air balloon ride. You won't find anything like it as you watch the African Bush come alive with the rising sun.

The Masai Mara's climate makes it a year-round adventure, though. Rainy Season comes from April to May, then again in November. Long before and after the wildebeest and zebra have made their "Great Migration:. Dry Season runs between July and October, offering the coolest weather--but the average climate is around 85F in the daytime, dropping into the 60's at night.

Cooler or wetter weather doesn't stop most people from coming to the Game Reserve, which belongs the red-robed Masai People. Big Cat Diary, a documentary program, is filmed within the park; and it hasn't been called the "Greatest Wildlife Reserve in the world" for nothing.

It's a land of open savannas, along the Great Rift Valley just 270km from Nairobi. You can fly in closer, so long as you don't mind small aircraft. And once you get here there's a wide choice of accommodations. The Mara Intrepids is a luxury tent camp that offers alfresco dining, en-suite bathrooms, and a bar/lounge.

The Mara Serena Safari Lodge is just as luxurious, with balconies overlooking the Bush; and both day and night game drives. You can even request a spa service outside to listen to the Bush sounds as you totally relax.

Some people might say that the Masai Mara is just a continuation of the Serengeti, but that's not fair. This is a game reserve that's in a class all its own.
