A Taste of High Adventure in Kruger National Park

For anyone visiting South Africa, one of the best National Parks to see the true wild is Kruger National Park. Spreading out over 19,485 square kilometers, right up to Zimbabwe, it offers some of the best game viewing on the continent.

Some would ask, when's the best time to go to Kruger; or Africa, for that matter. The answer is, anytime is the best time to do an African Safari. That being said, you need to take Kruger's weather into consideration. It experiences a subtropical climate, which means it gets awfully humid here during the summer.

That's the Northern Hemisphere's Winter, in case you didn't know; which coincides with the Rainy Season from September to May.

Others might disagree, and say that Kruger's Dry Season is the better of the two. With water and grass being scarce, animals of the Bush are forced to stick around to the rivers (like the Limpopo River) and watering holes. Thus making game viewing easier.

But, there's no chance that you won't see animals in Kruger. It is home to some 517 species of birds, 114 species of reptile, and 50 species of fish. You haven't even gotten to the mammals yet.

Anyone wishing to see the Big 5 (lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, and buffalo) will find them. Add in the giraffe, crocodile, cheetah, antelope, hyena, and the endangered African Wild Dog, and you've got yourself one outstanding safari vacation.

Taking the kids out into the brutal Bush might not sound like a good idea, but Kruger's got them covered. Special kids programs are available to teach them all about life on the African Plains.

The Kruger National Park boasts a good number of tented camps and luxury lodges & chalets. Some self-catered options are the most economical for families, while some like the Thornybush Tents are true luxury in the middle of the Plain.

You don't need to stay in one of the lodges or tent camps in the park to experience it, but to maintain its delicate eco-system it only allows a certain quota of vehicles in daily.

Not everyone comes to Kruger for its game drives (the main reason for coming to Africa, is it not?), but offers all sorts of exciting activities depending on how much adrenaline you want pumping.

You can take a leisurely canoe ride down the river, or sit fishing. Not big on the adrenaline scale, but lovely nonetheless. Hiking along the Wilderness Trails can be exciting, giving you chance to get off the beaten path; as will the 4x4 trails.

Now you've kicked it up a notch or two.

For a truly unique experience, try the Bush Braais. It's where you go out into the Bush at night surrounded by torches and campfires, and just sit listening to the night sounds of Africa.

And you couldn't ask for a better park to do it in than South Africa's Kruger.
