The Capital City of Antananarivo
The capital city of Antananarivo resembles an endearing toy town, dominated by small, brightly colored houses with triangular rooftops. Built on a series of hills, these vibrant buildings decorate a rolling landscape, interspersed with the adornment of blossoming jacaranda trees and purple bougainvillea. At sunset, the landscape takes on a beautiful orange glow, drowning the city in an air of warm serenity. The city is separated into two distinct areas known as the Upper and Lower Towns. The Lower Town, centered around the Avenue de l'Indépendance, is home to some quaint restaurants and cafes along the central boulevard, and a charming array of gift shops perfect for picking up unusual souvenirs of safaris in Africa. The Upper Town, the area around Rue du 26 Juin, could be classed as the cultural quarter, with boutiques and art shops complemented by exclusive hotels. With a range of museums recounting its history and some excellent markets displaying traditional Malagasy handicrafts, Antananarivo is a city of irresistible charm.
